MAKING A SHORT TERM VISIT

VISITING ABROAD FOR 6 MONTHS
Making a short term visit
Elderly people may move abroad temporarily or permanently for various reasons. Their right to lead a life of independence and participate in social and cultural life is recognized by the European Union in the Charter of Fundamental Rights. However, mobility becomes considerably challenging when age is accompanied by disability. While local authorities in their home country offer tailored privileges like private transportation and health services, these benefits are often unavailable in their new destination due to lack of recognition. Accessing such services overseas requires navigating complex bureaucratic procedures, demanding paperwork, extended waiting periods for administrative appointments, and language barriers.
This demonstration will highlight how the GLASS solution can address the complexities of transactions occurring between an EU country (Greece) and a non-EU country (Turkey), a context often fraught with administrative challenges, particularly for individuals with specific requirements. Our objective is to streamline the bureaucratic procedures for individuals with disabilities, especially senior citizens, who are seeking short-term travel opportunities.
This demonstrator focuses on Konstantinos, a 60-year-old disabled man residing in Athens, who receives an invitation from his grandchildren in Istanbul to spend six months with them. Delighted by the offer, Konstantinos embarks on this journey to relish quality time with his family. However, to ensure his well-being during his stay, he requires various services including health care, transportation, sports rehabilitation, and psycho-social assistance – all of which were readily accessible to him in Athens. Unfortunately, accessing these essential services in Istanbul involves navigating through a series of complex bureaucratic procedures. The GLASS project is poised to simplify this process and cater to Konstantinos’ needs with efficiency and ease.
